Island in the Mississippi River between Davenport, Iowa, and Rock Island, Ill., the westernmost Union prisoner-of-war camp consisted of 84 barracks put up in the roughest and cheapest manner.

Water supply and drainage were deficient, creating a sanitation problem. 5,000 Confederate prisoners were delivered there in December 1863, when the temperature was below zero. The prisoners were beset by a smallpox epidemic that sickened thousands and killed more than 600 within three months.

Because of the smallpox outbreak and its publicity, conditions improved, with laundries, sewers, and a large hospital being built. Out of the 12,409 men confined during Rock Island's 19-month operation, 1,960 prisoners and 171 guards died from disease.

During the Civil War, over 12,000 prisoners were house on Rock Island (now Arsenal Island) in Rock Island, IL. Of those housed here about 2,000 were shot or died from smallpox, pneumonia, and other medical ailments.

The 24th. Regiment Tennessee Infantry was organized for State Service August 6, 1861. with eleven companies, A to L, and was transferred to the service of the Confederate States August 24, 1861. Company M was added in the early part of 1862. The regiment was re-organized and reduced to ten companies, A to K. by consolidation, May 2, 1862. It was consolidated with the 19th. and 41st. Regiments Tennessee Infantry about January, 1865, and formed a temporary field organization.

About April 9, 1865, the 4th,5th,19th,24th,31st,33d,35th,38th and 41st Regiments Tennessee Infantry were consolidated and formed the 3d Consolidated Regiment Tennessee Infantry which was paroled at Greensboro, N.C., May 1, 1865

Haleman's name did not appear on the Company's Muster Roll of May 13th, 1862. However, he is listed as a Private of Company B of the 36th in the lists of Confederate dead at Rock Island. He was captured and died on December 23, 1863, as a Prisoner of War at the Rock Island, Illinois, prison camp. Haleman is buried in grave number 60 at Rock Island.

Thomas Andrews Hartshorn enlisted 7 April 1862 at Des Arc, Ark. He was captured 10 Sep 1863 in Little Rock Arkansas and was taken to the Gratiot Street Military Prison in St. Louis, MO, 18 Dec 1863.
He was forwarded to the Rock Island Prison, Ill., 31 Jan 1864. Ill upon arrival, he entered the Rock Island Barracks Hospital, the next day, 1 Feb 1864. He died 24 Apr 1864.

The following roster comes from a parole list following the fall of Vicksburg, Mississippi (July 4 1863)
where the St. Louis Artillery surrendered. Organized in early 1862, its founding Commander was
Capt. Emmett MacDonald. At surrender in Vicksburg, Capt. William E. Dawson was its commander.
After exchange it was consolidated with Lowe's Battery but retained the name, 3rd Missouri Artillery
("St. Louis Artillery). The St. Louis Artillery was named for the location in Missouri where the majority of its men were recruited.

This unit is commonly referred to as the "St. Louis Artillery". Its first Commander was Capt. Emmett

On July 4, 1863. Following exchange in Sept. 1863 it was consolidated with "Lowe's Battery"
Missouri Artillery. Hence, the following roster contains names of men that formerly were in Lowe's
battery, including Capt. Schuyler Lowe himself who for sometime commanded the consolidated "St.
Louis Artillery".

then W.D. Blocher's Battalion of Artillery, Trans-Mississippi Department. It was active at Cane Hill,
lost: 1 killed, 8 wounded, and 3 missing at Helena, and sustained no casualties at Jenkins Ferry.
The company totaled 43 men in May, 1862, and there were 82 fit for duty in July, 1863. Towards the end of the war it was stationed at Camden, Arkansas, and surrendered in June, 1865. Captains
James Gorham, A.A. Tilden, and Charles B. Lesueur were in command.

This Company was composed primarily of men from Buncombe County, N. C. and began organizing at Swannanoa on or about 1 March 1862.
On 31 March 1862 it was mustered in as Company K of the 11th Regiment, after that date the company functioned as part of the 11th Infantry.

Patrick Kelly was in Co. K, 11th North Carolina until transferred to Navy. He Resided in McDowell County enlisted in Buncombe County 15 April 1862. He transferred to the C.S. Navy, 1 April 1864.

4th or 8th (Baxter Smith's) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment

Organized Nov. 24, 1862. Annulled. Organized again Jan. 23, 1863. Sumner County furnished part of one company, namely Co. K. Men from Davidson, DeKalb, Sumner and Wilson counties. As it is impossible to distinguish the respective counties from which these men came, we include the entire company.

Col. Baxter Smith; Lt. Col. Paul F. Anderson; Major, Willis Scott Bledsoe; Co. K, Capt., Paul F. Anderson and James H. Britton.

Col. Smith was captured May 9, 1863, on patrol on the Caney Fork River and Lt. Col. Paul F. Anderson commanded the regiment the remainder of the war.

The regiment had a varied experience. They left Shelbyville on way to attempt the recapture of Ft. Donelson marching 125 miles each way. Defeated at Ft. Donelson losing 26 men. Back to Shelbyville, to Woodbury where they were twice surrounded losing 80 men to Hadley's Bend on the Cumberland River where they destroyed a train of supplies. Then to Sparta, to Trousdale County, then via Beech Grove and Fosterville to Rome, Ga., another 500 miles. Then with Gen. Longstreet at Knoxville, then in the Atlanta Campaign, then into East Tenn., and Va. Fighting at Saltville, Va., then into South Carolina fighting with Gen. Wade Hampton, surrendering at, Charlotte, N. C., May 3, 1865.
